Quilter's Block-a-Day Calendar Companion CDHow to Use This CDThis CD is set up so that you can easily navigate between the 366 blocks, basic quilting instructions, and 12 quilt projects. Use the navigation bar at left to move from one area of the CD to another. The blocks are listed alphabetically and by size (see buttons above). Clicking on a block illustration will take you to a PDF file, which can be viewed using Adobe Reader software. Each PDF has an image of the block, along with cutting directions as they appear in the Quilter's Block-a-Day Calendar. You'll also find measurements and cutting instructions for a second block size, a grouping of four blocks so that you can see the resulting secondary pattern, and a place to write notes and attach swatches. If a block requires appliqué or piecing templates, the appropriate template patterns accompany the block. To view and print the PDFs, you'll need version 5.0 or higher of Adobe Reader software. (Most computers have Adobe Reader software installed on them. Note that older versions of Adobe Reader are called Acrobat Reader. If you don't have Adobe Reader, visit the Adobe Web site at www.adobe.com and follow the instructions to download it for free or to upgrade.) The Block-Size Index is a four-page PDF that lists all the blocks by size, from 4" to 24". Once you've chosen a block in the size you need, you can look up the name in the alphabetical block index and find an image of the block. The Quilts page shows thumbnail images of the 12 projects. Clicking on the name under the quilt will link you to a PDF with project instructions and full-color illustrations. Everyone's printer is different, so it's important that you test your printer settings before using any of the template patterns. Go to the Test Block PDF, read it, print it; and then measure the block both horizontally and vertically. If the printed block does not measure 4" square, adjust your printer's settings until it does, referring to your printer manual as needed. You will find more help at www.adobe.com. For a quick review of cutting, piecing, and appliqué techniques, click the Basic Instructions link. Note that it is beyond the scope of this CD to teach you how to quilt, and the basic instructions are just that - basic. If you're interested in more quilting instruction, you will find many wonderful resources and books for that purpose in your favorite quilt shop.
