BOLD, BLACK & BEAUTIFUL QUILTS

by Debby Kratovil

Sixteen projects that incorporate the power of ebony to create quilts that are out of this world! Royal Star is where it all began and is the quilt on the cover. Night Butterflies is a fun child's quilt that not only is EASY, but fun and clever in the use of a traditional quilt block. Colossal Chrysanthemums is spectacular and Fair Play uses a block that is over 100 years old but has been modernized with a simple machine appliqué technique.

This book has been 7 years in the making. It all began with a packet of Benartex Fossil Ferns that I used to make Royal Star. This has been a cover quilt for Quick Quilts Magazine. It is a popular class that I teach locally (Atlanta, Georgia). The centers are quick-cut Nine Patch units and the star points are paper pieced. If you are comfortable with your sewing machine, you can make this dynamic quilt.

Then I discovered that I really enjoyed working with black as my background color. My editor, Jean Ann Wright went shopping and bought about 30 yards of bright fabrics and gave me my marching orders: SEW! Now I was really having fun.

The Talking Quilt had been brewing in my mind for several years as the result of buying the TriRecs tool by EZ Quilting. Darlene Zimmerman confirmed to me that she had also thought about making a tilted square quilt with her templates and she gave me her blessing. This is also another quilt I teach locally. The fun is that the center squares can feature all those novelty prints you've been saving, wondering what to do with them. I am finishing up a Talking Quilt with an outdoors theme that is perfect for that man in your life. The setting is also different. This quilt has a lot of possibilities!

Tessellating Stars is a design that I never get tired of. I have made this quilt many times and teach it locally and will also teach it this summer at the AQS Show in Nashville. It is fantastic in traditional colors, batiks, black and brights. It can be worked in two colors, two colors and a background, or every star can be a different fabric. The possibilities are endless!

There are Hearts, Hexagons, more Stars, Watermelons, a Mariner's Compass, a very quick Wedding Ring pattern and an Irish Chain. Where else can you find 16 patterns all in one place for $1.25 a pattern? This is 80 pages of inspiration, eye-candy and so many quilts that you won't know where to begin. Even the editor I worked with on this book has selected 3 quilts she can't wait to start! There is a quilt in there for EVERY QUILTER.

Thanks to everyone who has been so supportive of me and my quilting. I love what I do and I enjoy sharing it all with the quilting community.
