The Wheel of Mystery is no mystery at all when the curved piecing is simplified and changed to appliqué! The interaction of the curves when they are placed block to block creates the illusion of circles twisting and winding over the face of the quilt. In fact, another name used for this traditional block is Winding Ways. I chose the background fabrics of white and black to get the strongest effect. With my selection of bright prints I get the maximum of bold statements in this curving, mysterious (and very simple) of quilts to make.
The Wheel of Mystery block has traditionally been pieced with curved patches but my method has simplified this to only two pieces - the wheel and the background. The two units are joined with appliqué. This 7" block can also be raw edge appliquéd with a straight stitch.
I have other samples of this quilt using two other methods (traditional curved patch sewing & 4 Patch appliqué method) to inspire the students to choose their own version. There are design possibilities that we will explore, if time permits.
